Video call blackmail

An unknown video call shows an obscene clip, records your face, and the caller demands money to not “upload” it.

What it looks like

Unknown number

I have recorded your video call. Pay ₹50,000 now or I will send it to your family and upload it on YouTube. Then a “Delhi police officer” will call you to settle the case.

Example made up by us. Numbers and links removed.

How it works

  1. A friendly chat with a stranger moves to a sudden video call.
  2. Your face is recorded next to an obscene video.
  3. They demand money, then a fake “police officer” or “YouTube official” asks for more.

Red flags

  • Video calls from people you don’t know.
  • Demands for money to delete or not publish something.
  • A “police officer” offering to settle the matter for a fee.

What to do

  • Don’t pay. Paying leads to more demands.
  • Don’t delete the chat. Take screenshots, then block the number.
  • Report on cybercrime.gov.in (there is a confidential option for women and children) or call 1930.
  • Tell someone you trust. You did nothing wrong.
